Acer AOD250-1694 10.1-Inch White Netbook – Up To 8 Hours Of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)

The computer itself is great. I love that its compact and has plenty of battery life. The touchpad is the least annoying of any laptop I’ve ever used. The windows 7 starter operating system, however is not. its a highly abbreviated version created for emerging markets in third world countries. There’s so much lacking. you cant even put up a picture on the desktop background. Save your money and buy the XP version. I wish I did.

Toshiba Mini NB205-N230 Perfect for What It is

November 17, 2009 – 10:17 pm

Toshiba Mini NB205-N230 10.1-Inch Black Onyx Netbook – 9 Hours Of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)

I actually bought the Toshiba Mini NB205-N230, pre-ordering it from amazon, so this review is by an actual owner. In addition to this netbook, I also own 2 desktops (one I built myself) and two laptops. Before buying, one needs to realize the limitations of a netbook. It’s not meant as a replacement for your desktop or laptop. I bought it for remote access to my company’s server so I could prepare reports from the road and not have to drive 1-2 hours to my office. For this and for internet browsing, it has been perfect. Two others in my office have Asus and HP netbooks and this Toshiba Mini NB205-N230 blows them away, if for nothing else the keyboard layout. Wi-fi reception has been much better than the laptop I previously used, so I have no complaints at all. Windows 7 Starter has been fine. I didn’t need all the bells and whistles and stupid Windows tricks. No wallpaper? Who cares?

All I can suggest is that you do your research to make sure a netbook fits your needs. Read the reviews and visit a retail outlet to check out the various models, keyboard layout, etc. At this time I highly recommend the Toshiba. I thought my wife might complain about the brown color, but she and everyone else loves it. A nice change from black or blue.

Gateway EC1430U 11.6-Inch Black Laptop – Up To 7 Hours Of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium)

It took me 2 months to decide on which laptop or netbook would replace my Toshiba 17 inches Widescreen laptop which I own for more than 3 years now. I travel a lot, my Toshiba has been great and continue to work perfectly but I needed an ultra portable laptop/netbook, easy to carry, something that would fit easily in a suitcase, backpack, or even carry it with me. Battery power came to be a major factor, since I travel a lot, sometimes to find a plug at the airports, or just every where else like a coffee shop can be a challenge; so I wanted at least a battery that could last 3 hours or so.
After careful consideration and research, and based on how much I wanted to spend, Gateway beats all other brands. The quality, the specifications and beauty, Gateway is unmatched. I’m a Toshiba or Sony lover when it comes to electronics, but this time around, Gateway proved me wrong for sure.

So, this Gateway Ec1430u is brand new as of Oct 23, 2009. I ordered mine yesterday Oct 22, 2009 when it was released with Windows 7 release. I’m very happy about my choice, the battery doesn’t stick out as I saw on other netbooks with 6-cell battery and it lasts up to 8 hours. I just tested it with a movie, unplugged it, showed it could run 5 hours and 25 mins on battery alone, that’s amazing. And I should add that once unplugged the default brightness is 50%, but I changed it to 80%.
It’s very light, I can barely feel anything in my hand when I lift it, it’s been running for 3 hours now and I can’t feel any heat at all, how is that possible? my Toshiba laptop heats up tremendously, the fans run on high most of the time therefore noisy. This Gateway is quiet as a turtle. Not to mention how sleek it looks, the chrome Gateway label is pretty on the outside cover.
The keyboard is full, keys are soft to touch and I have plenty of room when typing.
The most dramatic change to come with this EC series is that previous netbooks couldn’t play HD movies easily, this Gateway EC1430u is HD friendly and has an HDMI port. It doesn’t have a DVD/DC optical drive which I don’t really miss, with the Internet today, I can watch movies online, download TV shows, etc…for other purposes I would get an external drive just in case I need it. But I barely use my DVD/CD optical drive on my Toshiba laptop.
The Touchpad is mutli-gesture, you find some features of the iphone, it is smart enough to recognize 2 fingers command, expand/contract a picture etc…
Did I also mention it comes with Windows 7? incredible improvement from Microsoft from Windows Vista. It shuts down quickly, so far it takes less than 5 seconds to shut down. Start up is quick as well. Windows 7 is easy to navigate.
So my overall opinion is extremely good. I would give this laptop a 5 star-rating.

I strongly recommend you buy it as soon as possible while it is in stock, because once more and more people find about it, it would evaporate from any store. Too bad Gateway doesn’t advertise.

Cheapest Samsung NC10-11GP 10.2-Inch Pink Netbook – 6 Cell Battery

September 18, 2009 – 12:29 am

Cheapest Samsung NC10-11GP 10.2-Inch Pink Netbook – 6 Cell Battery

As many have already said, the Samsung NC10 is a great machine. The size is just right, the screen bezel doesn’t appear to be huge as on other netbooks, and the keyboard is excellent. The keys are a bit stiffer than I am used to, but they have a comfortable amount of travel and I am able to touch type without difficulty. The only real issue I have with the keyboard is the need to press Fn to use End and Home keys, but I suspect every netbook would suffer this fate due to lack of space. I appreciate the standard key layout of the NC10, as this was one of my concerns about the ASUS 1000ha and the soon to be released 1002ha. I am a heavy right shift key user and am pleased that Samsung didn’t mess with it.

I compared this with an Acer Aspire One (AAO) from a local store, and I am completely satisfied with choosing the Samsung. The AAO was also a great machine, but the difference is really in the keyboard. That and the Samsung has a matte finish screen which is appreciated in public places for the lack of glare. The brightness is sufficient and as many have said, the battery life is great. I also think the Samsung runs quieter than the AAO does.

The NC10 comes with a bunch of Samsung utilities, but to be honest I haven’t really messed with them. I removed the only trial software that I noticed, McAfee, and that’s about it. I loaded some software over my home network and have been good to go. The only complaint about software is the lack of updates loaded out of the box. It comes with IE 6 so you have to load IE 7 and the multitude of updates that come along with it. I also loaded Chrome and soon will load Firefox and everything works as expected thus far. The speed is sufficient, I would say it is faster than my old Pentium M 2.0 GHz, 1GB RAM, laptop. I watched the latest episode of Heroes on [...] without stutter so I am pleased about that.

Lastly, thank you Samsung for not making the exterior surface shiny and for putting the mouse button where it is supposed to be. The AAO looked terrible with the shiny surfaces while the NC10 doesn’t get all gummed up with fingerprints like the AAO does. It may seem like a minor issue but it really is an annoyance with how dirty the AAO and other shiny netbooks appear to be. Although I primarily tap to click, the existence of a proper mouse button below the track pad is a huge bonus. Actually, this is the main reason I didn’t even consider the new HP Mini 1000 as I didn’t really care for that design on the AAO either.

Overall, this is the one to get!

Buying MSI Wind U123-002US 10.2-Inch Red Netbook

September 9, 2009 – 11:43 pm

Buying MSI Wind U123-002US 10.2-Inch Red Netbook – 6 Cell Battery

I can’t believe that all the parts (screen, CPU, RAM, hard disk, keyboard, Windows license, etc), plus all the shipping (parts go to China and back, and then from Amazon to me) still only costs me $326. It’s a real bargain, AFAIAC.

I ordered another 1 GB SODIMM of RAM to upgrade, but realized that there’s only one slot on the inside, which already had 1 GB. You’ll have to buy a 2 GB stick and throw away the existing 1 GB stick to get to 2 GB.

The CPU is quite nice — it’s a dual-core, 1.66 GHz CPU. The graphics is GMA 950, although under-clocked to 133 MHz internal frequency. If you want to play games, you probably want to find a program called BK_GMAFIX and run that before you start the game — it will clock the graphics back up to 400 MHz! (Although this mainly affects texturing in 3D, so it won’t make things run 2x faster)

The battery is in the back, and the screen is farily heavy, so the entire thing is quite weighted towards the rear. This means that it will easily tip over when standing with the screen flipped up. On the other hand, if you carry it opened, with the Vee of the hinge in your hand, the weight is in your hand, not out towards the edges, meaning you’re less likely to drop it.

All in all, this is a fine choice at the lower end of the netbook scale. And if you’re getting a netbook, it really doesn’t make sense to get a high-end book (like the Asus N10j, which has great specs — but costs twice what this one does!).

Discount Acer Aspire One AOD150-1577 10.1-Inch Diamond Black Netbook – 6.5 Hour Battery Life

September 6, 2009 – 12:31 am

Discount Acer Aspire One AOD150-1577 10.1-Inch Diamond Black Netbook – 6.5 Hour Battery Life

I bought this for 360 dollars a year ago, I use it in spots where I have my notebook computer already dedicated to a task but need an additional computer to go watch something on hulu, msnbc, cnn, or pbs to entertain me while I’m waiting on my main machine(s).

Mine has a 120GB HDD with 1.5GB of RAM (the maximum that can be installed). I have it Dual Booted for Windows XP and Ubuntu Studio Linux.

Ubuntu Studio is an open source (= free, zero cost) distribution of Ubuntu Linux that comes with about 20 audio production tools (including Ardour HD Recording, ZynAddSubFx “Mega Synth”, Hydrogen Drum Machine, JACK Virtual Patch Bay, Rosegarden MIDI capable Music Composition and Authoring tool), 10 graphics tools including GIMP (Photoshop Clone), and about 5 video tools (including Kino). And as with all versions of Ubuntu, comes with Sun’s Open Office which is a free alternative to Microsoft Office, complete with Adobe PDF generation.

If you need demonstrations of Ubuntu Studio, perform a search on youtube for “Ubuntu Studio” and “rofthorax”, that’s my user account. I have a few demonstrations of me collecting drum patterns from a Yamaha YPT-300 keyboard to a Acer Aspire One, and use the Acer Aspire One as a DSP effects unit for my music listening. I’ve also demonstrated, off camera, the use of Rosegarden to play midi files through Fluidsynth (Wavetable Sound Card Emulator), into Jack Rack (DSP Effects).

In Windows XP I’ve used the Acer Aspire One to collect NTSC quality video from a VCR with a USB Video Card. I’ve installed and used one of the many 5.1 USB sound cards available on EBAY for 24 dollars, something I demonstrate on my youtube account. I’ve installed Battlefield 1942 on it, it gets about 10 frames per second (not stellar, but possible). I’ve also played the Indie Video Game “GISH” and “Future Pinball” in WINE on the Ubuntu Side.

Pretty much anything you can do with Windows or Ubuntu Linux on other machines, you can do with this Acer Aspire, but at half the size of a laptop, which makes it easy to tote, and pull out when needed. So whether you are a english student, a rock star or a operating systems programmer, the Acer Aspire is a practical solution to your needs.

Cheapest Acer Aspire AS1410-8913 11.6-Inch Ruby Red Laptop – 6 Hour Battery Life

I’ve had this computer for a few days now, and so far I am really pleased. We needed something super small and light, but just couldn’t pull the trigger on a netbook because of their drawbacks, but this computer is the first of t next generation of reasonably priced half-netbook/half-ultaportable laptop, and it has satisfied all of my concerns:

First, most netbooks have an Atom-based processor, which can choke on anything flashed-based, and they get bogged down when you have multiple applications/tabs. This computer has the Intel Core 2 Solo processor, which is a rare step up usually only found on more expensive computers (it is the same CPU as the $700 MSI 340 http://www.amazon.com/MSI-X340-021US-Slim-13-4-Inch-Laptop/dp/B0028ACYKE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1251918611&sr=8-1). This makes it hugely faster than almost every other netbook. Combined with it’s extra 1 GB of RAM (2 total) it is capable of running Windows Vista and is eligilbe to upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out. I watched streaming HD video on one half of the screen last night, and surfed in multiple tabs on the other half of the screen and didn’t find it slow at all.

Next, I have also seen how the 10.1 inch screen can make you feel like you are constantly scrolling up and down to veiw websites. On this size screen, especially with the HD resolution, it just feels like you are seeing a slightly miniaturized version of the full site. It also has mouse gestures so it is super-easy to adjust your text size, if it seems to be to small on a specific site.

Next, most netbooks only have wireless b/g capabilities, but this one also includes draftN, so it is faster if you have a draftn wirless adapter. The inclusion of an hdmi port also is a relatively rare feature on a netbook, but something I was looking for.

The keyboard is just fine, it takes a little while to adjust, but all keyboards do. The touchpad is just fine, although it is the same color as the rest of the computer, so you have to find the edges of the touchpad by feel rather than sight (I actually like the way it makes it look though. Plus, it supports multi-touch gestures, which is really nice.

The webcam is also a little higher quality than in a traditional netbook – basically it can ahndle lower ambient light levels.

The speakers are actually pretty good – my wife was streaming pandora, and it was surprisingly loud and un-tinny.

Battery – this is the one area where it is not as good as the better netbooks. Running it hard, we’ve been getting about 4.5-5 hours on the battery. It comes with three power plans: “Balanced,” “Power Saver,” and “High Performance.” We’ve been on “Balanced.” The power adapter is super small and light, however.

My wife had a big issue making sure that this wouldn’t be hot on her hands or on her lap, and this one is just fine.

We bought the red version, and the color of the picture in amazon is way off. The case is a pearlescent red, but definately not a jeweltone. I would say it is much more of an earthy red, with a bit of brown and maroon in it. If I could go back and do it all over again, I might switch to the blue.

So why did we choose this computer over all the other choices? Here’s the other computers we considered, and why we chose this instead:

Vs. Asus Eee PC 1005HA – This is the next best other netbook (followed by the Asus Aspire Ones), but the 1410 is better in every way performance wise except batametery. Really it was the Atom processor and 1 GB of ram in these two that became the dealbreaker, and pushed us to spend the extra $60 for the 1410.
Vs. almost all other netbooks – all other netbooks beat out by the Asus 1005, and this beats that.
Dell 11x 11.6 laptop – this one isn’t on amazon, but it’s Dell’s next step up laptop – but the processor in the Dell is noticeably less fast than the battery life is noticeably shorter. Dell also has a 4.2 pound 14.1 Inspiron that we looked at, but decided it was a bit too big, and too expensive.

We also considered going one more size up to the:
Vs. MSI 340 13.4 inch screen – The MSI is thinner, has roughly equivalent features, and bigger screen in a super sexy package, but +$250 and battery lasts much less.
Vs. Aceer Aspire Timeline. again, roughly equivalent performance, bigger screen, but +$150, and isn’t as thin as the 1410, and really isn’t as thin as the MSI.

Everything else that was more powerful was much more money.Buy Acer Aspire AS1410 8913 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]
