Acer AS5517-1643 Right now

Acer AS5517-1643 15.6-Inch Black Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

I bought this computer on sale at a different retailer (well under four hundred), but it’s still well worth the current listed price here. At the time I bought it, I thought it had a faster processor (was looking at the wrong specs), so when I got the actual computer I was dismayed to see 1.6 GHz on the box. Thought about taking it back, but, it was just such a good deal, and I was in a situation where I needed a computer immediately. Another disappointment was its lack of a webcam, in the picture it looks like it has one, but it’s just the place where one would have been.

It might seem odd to start out a 5 star review with disappointments, but this was an emergency purchase and wasn’t my first choice,Acer AS5517-1643 was just the best thing I could afford. However (and it’s a big however), this little computer rocks very, very hard. It totally exceeded my expectations, and there aren’t too many things that do that.

The Good:
* It’s surprisingly fast – faster than the T7200 2GHz 64bit dual core laptop it replaced. Significantly faster.
* It has enough memory for most folks (unless you’re like me, the mad multi-tasker, in which case, go ahead and increase it to 4GB — it will run all sorts of apps (dreamweaver, photoshop elements, several browsers, local web server, etc) simultaneously when running at 60 – 80% of 3836GB available (out of the 4GB) memory without getting boggy.
* The screen is bright, clear, and has decently vivid color. Watching DVDs and streaming HD video is delightful.
* The keyboard is decent, and the trackpad is one of the first I’ve ever been able to use without missing a mouse. It’s positioned perfectly, recessed just enough, and has software smart enough to recognize accidental touches vs. deliberate ones. The scroll area on the right side is nice responsive.
* Battery life is adequate, this isn’t a Low Voltage processor so it’s going to last 2-3 hours with moderate use and the screen dimmed (it reports 4 hours left when I unplug it, but I’ve never used it more than an hour unplugged — someday i’ll test it to see how long it’ll last, and update this review then).
* Having the numeric keypad is such a good thing. It’s a little squeezed in, so the function keys and decimal are on top instead of on the side, but it’s easy enough to get used to.
* Runs external monitor with no problems (but that needs to be configured in the thing called “Acer Grid” to really work right)

The Hmmm…
* The pattern on the lid is supposed to be fingerprint resistant, but you can still see fingerprints. (It’s still very pretty, no complaints). However, whatever they used on the keyboard frame and the trackpad is some sort of miraculous substance that you cannot tell has been touched. I’ve had my greasy paws resting on it for hours on end for over a week now, never wiped it clean, it’s just … clean.
* There was a little crapware to uninstall, nothing too annoying, but I feel the need to mention it, hopefully one day manufacturer’s will “get it” and stop pre-installing crap entirely? Hey, a girl can dream.
* Only 2 USB ports – when I set it up at work (plugged into external monitor, with keyboard and mouse in front of the big monitor) this means I’d need a USB hub to use any other USB device. No big deal though.

The Meh…
* Speakers don’t rock — but — plugged in my old altec lansing powered speakers + subwoofer (model VS2321 if you were wondering, nothing fancy, just basic laptop speakers) and the sound watching Foo Fighters live stream was freakin’ awesome.
* Last night I plugged my new Droid in to transfer music, and all the browsers got squirrely while it was plugged in. Every browser (I have 5 installed) crashed constantly while Android phone was connected. No big deal, just … weird.

In Conclusion:

Acer AS5517-1643 is a good, solid, basic machine, at a great price — (I paid more for my telephone after deposits, fees, taxes, etc :) — and it’s the only time I’ve been disappointed by the numbers in the specs but pleasantly surprised by the *actual performance* – usually it’s the other way around. It’s a pleasure to type on, the trackpad is awesome, the screen is lovely, and it strikes a nice balance in size between the huge desktop-replacements and the little ultra-portables that always feel a little cramped. And Windows 7 is an awesome OS (been using it since late beta) and the release version running on a computer built for it is *sweet*.

I am new to laptop computers. I just got the Aspire one D250-1990 by Acer. It charged up very nicely. Seems to work just fine. Battery life is good. Just don’t plan plugging a external CD/DVD RW in and expect the battery life to last a long time. I got the Asus SDRW-08D1S-U USB external drive also. It pairs up and looks nice together. I haven’t used the burning feature yet, so I can’t say much about it at this time. I am using the Cyberlink software that come with the drive. I am used to Nero for all my other computers. I also updated the ram memory to 2GB. Not sure it is needed. Installing software went in fine I don’t like Microsoft Works at all. I have a old copy of Microsoft 2000 Office Pro that I put on the Aspire. Works great. A disadvantage I found was when I tried to put a older copy of Adobe CS2 on the machine. I got a message saying that the Video card and monitor wasn’t sufficient for CS2. Lucky I had a older copy of CS and it went in Ok and works well This isn’t a big time graphics computer. So don’t think it is. It will work great for what it is intended for. It came with Windows Xp Home. I didn’t want all the little Lite software that comes with it already installed.

Please don’t take the following the wrong way. I went to my local computer shop to buy this one. Only reason was, if I had a lot of problems, I had someone local to fall back on. Amazon is a class act. I have used them for years and had no complaints with them. Just a little hesitant this time for the first time around.

The only con is the small size of the screen. I use a 24 inch wide screen on my other computers. Just not used to the small size. You can change the type size on the internet, and it works well on that. I hope you like it as much as I do.

11.6-Inch Widescreen Display

The 11.6-inch LED-backlit display (1366 x 768 pixels) presents true 16:9 aspect ratio with high-def resolution and fast 8ms (millisecond) response time for high-quality media playback as well as increased readability in low-light conditions. And the LED backlight technology is 33 percent more energy efficient than standard CCFL LCD screens.

Power-Sipping Processor

Newly designed from the ground up, the Intel Atom Z520 uses a 45nm (nanometer) design structure with new hafnium-infused circuitry–which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors–to conserve even more energy and give you more time away from the wall outlet. The Intel Atom Z520 provides a 1.3 GHz CPU speed with a 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 512 KB L2 cache–which uses just 2 watts of power. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system’s performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) It supports Intel’s 64-bit computing architecture, which can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory with compatible 64-bit software, as well as Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology for speedier multitasking.

 The Multi-Gestured Acer Aspire One

A Multi-Gesture Touchpad allows you to pinch, flick and swirl your fingers across the touchpad for more natural photo and video viewing as well as intuitive navigation of websites. The Multi-Gesture Touchpad enables you to scroll, zoom in and out and flip through web pages, photos, spreadsheets and more. The TouchPad can also be disabled with a one-touch button, eliminating accidental cursor movement with palms and wrists when using an external mouse.

Windows Vista Home Basic Operating System

Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit) is the operating system for users with basic computing needs, such as surfing the Internet, corresponding with friends and family using e-mail, or performing basic document creation and editing tasks. Additionally, Windows Vista Home Basic integrates new search tools throughout the operating system to help you quickly find the precise file or program you need. Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family’s use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

Cheapest Acer Aspire Timeline AS4810TZ-4696 14-Inch Laptop – 8+ Hours Battery Life

September 13, 2009 – 2:33 pm

Cheapest Acer Aspire Timeline AS4810TZ-4696 14-Inch Laptop – 8+ Hours Battery Life

Pros:

-Bright LED Backlit screen.
-Very light and portable.
-Cool on your lap and quiet.
-DVD Burner.
-HDMI output.
-Solid battery life (5+ hours real world).
-Runs programs much better than Netbooks…heck, it has Vista pre-installed, it has to be powerful.

Cons:

-Bloatware! Tons of useless things installed…20+ trial games.
-Backup DVD’s didn’t burn.
-Almost zero documentation. Had to figure out on my own what all the flashing lights were.

This is the perfect combination of netbook & laptop. It has the price of a high-end netbook, with the performance of a laptop. It won’t run 5 programs at once, burn a DVD, and render a movie at the same time, but it will do each of these by themselves with zero problems.

The screen is unbelievable. Very bright. You can’t run it on the highest setting in the dark because it is blinding.

Battery life is very solid for the size of the battery. A lot of laptops have really big batteries attached to them to get long life. This computer doesn’t have a big battery, but lasts a very long time. It has a battery management system pre-installed that does the same thing as Windows 7 RC. I turned it off and just used Windows 7.

Overall, this computer can’t be beaten for the price. I have used/owned Apple laptops in the past. With Windows 7 running, this computer is better than any Mac at half the price…now, if only we could get rid of the crapware.

Acer Aspire Timeline AS5810TZ-4274 15.6-Inch Laptop – 8+ Hours Battery Life

September 10, 2009 – 9:55 pm

Acer Aspire Timeline AS5810TZ-4274 15.6-Inch Laptop – 8+ Hours Battery Life

The performance on this laptop could be better but for basic web surfing and running word processors this laptop works just fine. Free Windows 7 upgrade is what makes this an even better deal! Although this is not as light as the smaller display models of this laptop, it is light enough for the giant, beautiful, bright, and sharp LED display! The laptop looks very sleek and stylish. With 3gb of ram that is plenty for all your multitask needs! I doubt that the processor or graphics accelerator can handle any heavy gaming though. So just keep that in mind if gaming is essential for your purchase. Netbooks are gaining a lot of popularity right now but the largest netbook display I have seen is 10.1″ or so. For me the larger display was more important to me and I also love the full size keyboard of the Acer Aspire Timeline. It does take a bit legwork right out of the box though. The system comes installed with Vista SP1. So there are a tremendous amount of Windows system updates. In addition, there are also a handful of drivers and bios update for this system from Acer. Once you get all those completed, which could easily take up several hours, you should be good to go with a smooth running system! :)

Acer Aspire AS1410-8804 11.6-Inch Black Laptop – 6 Hour Battery Life

I use a lot of different computers. My main work machine is a macbook pro 15″. My gaming machine is a core2quad q6600 w/ ATI 9870. I had a acer aspire one 8.9″ atom based machine for travel that I sold when I bought this (which is a great machine in its own right). I also had an Inspiron 11z that I thought was great until I saw this machine’s specs for the same price. I returned the 11z and bought this.

This machine is simply an amazing value for the money. The Dell is indeed good, but this one outclasses it in every way. All of the compromises of the 11z are gone. Battery 6 cell vs. 3 cell. Processor 1.4ghz solo vs. Celeron 1.2ghz. N wireless vs. G. I think it is amazing that Acer/Amazon can sell this machine and make any money.

Performance is great for general purpose computing and it can even play games (casual mostly). I hooked this up to my 1080p hdtv and the video and audio output is really nice. Overall, I’m very happy. Don’t expect a desktop here.. that it is not, but it is a great travel companion and overall I am really impressed.Buy Acer Aspire AS1410 8804 Lowest Price, Order Now! Cheapest Acer Aspire AS1410-8913 11.6-Inch Ruby Red Laptop – 6 Hour Battery Life

I’ve had this computer for a few days now, and so far I am really pleased. We needed something super small and light, but just couldn’t pull the trigger on a netbook because of their drawbacks, but this computer is the first of t next generation of reasonably priced half-netbook/half-ultaportable laptop, and it has satisfied all of my concerns:

First, most netbooks have an Atom-based processor, which can choke on anything flashed-based, and they get bogged down when you have multiple applications/tabs. This computer has the Intel Core 2 Solo processor, which is a rare step up usually only found on more expensive computers (it is the same CPU as the $700 MSI 340 http://www.amazon.com/MSI-X340-021US-Slim-13-4-Inch-Laptop/dp/B0028ACYKE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1251918611&sr=8-1). This makes it hugely faster than almost every other netbook. Combined with it’s extra 1 GB of RAM (2 total) it is capable of running Windows Vista and is eligilbe to upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out. I watched streaming HD video on one half of the screen last night, and surfed in multiple tabs on the other half of the screen and didn’t find it slow at all.

Next, I have also seen how the 10.1 inch screen can make you feel like you are constantly scrolling up and down to veiw websites. On this size screen, especially with the HD resolution, it just feels like you are seeing a slightly miniaturized version of the full site. It also has mouse gestures so it is super-easy to adjust your text size, if it seems to be to small on a specific site.

Next, most netbooks only have wireless b/g capabilities, but this one also includes draftN, so it is faster if you have a draftn wirless adapter. The inclusion of an hdmi port also is a relatively rare feature on a netbook, but something I was looking for.

The keyboard is just fine, it takes a little while to adjust, but all keyboards do. The touchpad is just fine, although it is the same color as the rest of the computer, so you have to find the edges of the touchpad by feel rather than sight (I actually like the way it makes it look though. Plus, it supports multi-touch gestures, which is really nice.

The webcam is also a little higher quality than in a traditional netbook – basically it can ahndle lower ambient light levels.

The speakers are actually pretty good – my wife was streaming pandora, and it was surprisingly loud and un-tinny.

Battery – this is the one area where it is not as good as the better netbooks. Running it hard, we’ve been getting about 4.5-5 hours on the battery. It comes with three power plans: “Balanced,” “Power Saver,” and “High Performance.” We’ve been on “Balanced.” The power adapter is super small and light, however.

My wife had a big issue making sure that this wouldn’t be hot on her hands or on her lap, and this one is just fine.

We bought the red version, and the color of the picture in amazon is way off. The case is a pearlescent red, but definately not a jeweltone. I would say it is much more of an earthy red, with a bit of brown and maroon in it. If I could go back and do it all over again, I might switch to the blue.

So why did we choose this computer over all the other choices? Here’s the other computers we considered, and why we chose this instead:

Vs. Asus Eee PC 1005HA – This is the next best other netbook (followed by the Asus Aspire Ones), but the 1410 is better in every way performance wise except batametery. Really it was the Atom processor and 1 GB of ram in these two that became the dealbreaker, and pushed us to spend the extra $60 for the 1410.
Vs. almost all other netbooks – all other netbooks beat out by the Asus 1005, and this beats that.
Dell 11x 11.6 laptop – this one isn’t on amazon, but it’s Dell’s next step up laptop – but the processor in the Dell is noticeably less fast than the battery life is noticeably shorter. Dell also has a 4.2 pound 14.1 Inspiron that we looked at, but decided it was a bit too big, and too expensive.

We also considered going one more size up to the:
Vs. MSI 340 13.4 inch screen – The MSI is thinner, has roughly equivalent features, and bigger screen in a super sexy package, but +$250 and battery lasts much less.
Vs. Aceer Aspire Timeline. again, roughly equivalent performance, bigger screen, but +$150, and isn’t as thin as the 1410, and really isn’t as thin as the MSI.

Everything else that was more powerful was much more money.Buy Acer Aspire AS1410 8913 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]
